Our Lady Star of the Sea School
On Thursday, September 14, 2010, Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic School, in Stamford, was awarded the U.S. Department of Education prestigious Blue ribbon. The Blue Ribbon program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools that are either academically superior or that demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement to high levels. Schools that qualify perform in the top 10 percent of their state, in the case of public schools, or in the top 10 percent of the nation on nationally‐normed tests, in the case of private and religious schools. These schools serve as models for other schools throughout the nation.
Our Lady Star of the Sea is a Catholic Elementary School for grades PreK through 5th on Shippan Ave. in Stamford. They are part of the Stamford Catholic School System. According to Sister Anne Landry CND, former Principal at Our Lady Star of the Sea, “It is quite an honor to be one of only 50 private schools nationwide to be selected as a Blue Ribbon School. It is a testimony to our excellent teachers, wonderful students and dedicated parents. We realize that during these difficult economic times it is a sacrifice for parents to send their children to a Catholic school. The fact that OLSS has been named as a Blue Ribbon School can help assure parents that their sacrifice is well worth it, because their children are being educated in a school that meets the highest academic standards. We received this honor because of our dedicated staff, our teachers, all of whom are highly credentialed and certified, our enthusiastic parents and our diverse students”.
Our mission at Our Lady Star of the Sea is to recognize that in the universe no two stars share the same sphere; our faculty strives to foster individual self‐esteem, encourage creative thinking, and build moral character. At the same time, we rejoice in the interactive design of the universe, and so we teach our stars the importance of friendship, cooperation, and a love and respect for all of God’s children. Our students are taught not to reach for the stars, but to become one. Our student population consists of a diverse mixture of race and ethnicity and though we are a Catholic School our door is open to students of other faiths as well.
The Blue Ribbon award calls upon the recipient school to continue to rise to new levels of competence in service to student success in learning. Our Lady Star of the Sea School welcomes the challenge.
